Halloween is the perfect time to experiment with fun macaron shapes — and this potion bottle design is simple enough for beginners while still looking magical and impressive once finished.
The best part? This shape only uses one color macaron batter, making it approachable if you’re just getting started with shaped macarons. All the “magic” comes from how you decorate them afterwards.
If you’re brand new to macarons, you’ll love starting with fun shapes like this. And if you’re ready to go deeper, I created a step-by-step Macaron Guide that covers my recipe, mixing technique, and beginner tips so you can bake with confidence.
Why Potion Bottles Are Beginner-Friendly
- One batter color – no complicated piping with multiple shades.
- Simple shape – a circle with a short bottle neck and cap. Think of it like piping a round macaron with a little rectangle on top.
- Decorating flexibility – the watercolor effect is done after baking, so you can relax during piping.
If you can pipe a round macaron, you can definitely try this shape!
Before you start, grab the free potion bottle template. Print it, place it under your parchment or silicone mat, and you’ll have an easy guide for piping uniform potion bottles every time.
How to Pipe the Potion Bottle Shape
- Start with your favorite macaron recipe and tint the batter your base color. I chose a light pink, but you could easily go for green, purple, or your favorite spooky color scheme.
- Pipe a round base for the bottle.
- With a smaller piping tip (like #5) pipe a small line and rectangle on top for cap.
That’s it! Bake your shells as usual, and then it’s time for the fun part — decorating.
How to Decorate Potion Bottle Macarons
Here’s how I gave these bottles their magical finish:
✨ Watercolor Potion Swirls
- Mix up a thin royal icing in a few shades of the same color family (I used 3 shades of pink).
- Use a small paintbrush to “watercolor” the inside of the potion bottle, letting the colors blend and swirl together.
✨ Foil-Wrapped Bottle Cap
- The cap looked a little plain on its own, so I covered it with edible silver leaf.
- This gives the effect of a wrapped champagne bottle cork and instantly elevates the look.
Tips & Variations
- Try green or purple for a more classic witchy potion.
- Add an edible glitter or shimmer dust for extra sparkle.
- Play with metallic foil colors — silver, gold, or even copper would all look magical.
Flavor Idea
These macarons are on the larger side, almost fatcaron size, which is great because it gives you more room to have an extra filling surprise on the inside.
The filling I used, and have become a customer favorite is an Italian Meringue Buttercream with a center of Fresh Raspberry Filling.

Potion bottle macarons are a fun way to celebrate Halloween without needing advanced piping skills. With just one batter color and some creative painting, you can make these look like they’re swirling with enchantment.
Wouldn’t a whole tray of these at a Halloween party look amazing?
